TAP designs

The pupose of the TAP is to provide a sense of arrival and welcome at the river's edge. For many people, this will be the first opportunity of the day to stop, orientate and begin to engage with the river environment.

At the riverbank ...

We have begun by putting forward three basic configurations:

Option 1 - Jetty AccessOption 1 provides for jetty access to river craft.

A TAP following this configuration could be used for embarking / disembarking ferries or private craft. Suitably modified, it could offer a calling point for larger river boats also.

Option 2 - Floating PontoonOption 2 offers a floating pontoon.

This is not intended for boat access, but provides an opportunity for walkers to step out over the water.

Option 3 - BoardwalkOption 3 offers a section of riverside boardwalk.

Bollards are provided for temporary mooring of small craft. These are not, however, intended as permanent or overnight mooring points.

Approach signage

This is to make sure that approaching visitors - by car, cycle or on foot - are clearly signed and guided.

Interpretation signange

An elegant panel format has been designed and agreed by the Environment Agency. It will be used at all TAPs and will match those being installed by The Environment Agency at some two dozen locks up and down the river.

Interpretation panel design

The sign carries a number of features, including:

  • A small inset showing the full length of the river
  • A more detailed map of the nearby river stretch (a few miles in each direction)
  • There is also a highly detailed map of the immediate local area, showing locations of key facilities
  • The text and illustrations in the sign give local points of interest and suggest places that can be easil reached on foot or bicycle from this location
  • Some facts about this particular point on the river (height above sea level, distance from source, etc.)
  • Ample space can be allocated next to the panel, or on a strip below it, to carry the sponsor’s name, contact details and appropriate advertising messages
